Using Scoot Boots for Rehabilitation

An Introduction by Dave Macdonald, Former Farrier & Creator of Scoot Boots

Hi all, and welcome to the world of rehab for horses using Scoot Boots!

We are sharing this information with you based on the many questions we have received from our customers asking about using Scoot Boots as a rehabbing boot. Below are some of the most common injuries and ailments we get questioned about and how Scoot Boots can help!

Please note that we are NOT a veterinary service and we do not intend to give medical advice to you about your horse. We encourage you to do your research when investigating treatment for your horse.

How can Scoot Boots Help Manage my Horse’s Arthritis?

Scoot Boots can help a barefoot horse suffering from arthritis by helping to suppress the concussion on their hooves.

Because Scoot Boots are light, flexible and impact absorbing (like the sole of your sneakers) this can help your horse feel more comfortable. You can also use socks with your Scoot Boots to help keep the hoof and legs warm.

My Horse has Developed Thrush, how can Hoof Boots Help?

Scoot Boots are a great hoof boot to help with thrush and other bacterial infections.

Scoot Boots can help your horse’s hooves stay clean and dry when your horse is turned out and eliminate the build-up of bacterias. This is achieved by the unsurpassed drainage and ventilation which expels mud, dirt and water.

They can also be used with medication and/or wrapping. Due to their ventilation and breathability, Scoot Boots can also be kept on for long periods.

What can I do Throughout my Horse’s Laminitis Recovery?

Throughout a horse’s laminitis recovery, it is important to be able to ensure their hooves are in a comfortable position. This will help ease their pain and encourage movement, promoting blood circulation and healing.

Scoot Boots can be worn on a laminitic horse so long as the hoof wall is not distorted. Scoot Boots help provide protection for sensitive soles and allow the horse to stay comfortable during their rehabbing period. The unique open toe design relieves pressure which greatly increases the horse’s comfort.

How do I use Scoot Boots to Help Heal my Horse’s Abscess?

Abscesses usually require a poultice to help promote healing. The Scoot Boot is a wonderful tool to use in combination with this to help keep the poultice in place, ensuring the poultice and the hoof is kept clean, dry and bacteria-free during 24/7 turnout. Other traditional rehab boots prevent air circulation and increase bacteria build-up by trapping in moisture and debris.

My Horse is Beginning to Show Signs of Navicular Syndrome, What can I do?

Scoot Boots can help provide pain relief for a horse showing navicular symptoms. A good percentage of horses diagnosed with navicular don't have it. They simply have caudal heel pain as a result of bad shoeing and trimming practices which has compromised the correct hoof mechanism in the rear third of the hoof capsule leading to the corium becoming inflamed. Returning the hoof to a functional shape with correct trimming can successfully rehabilitate the hooves if not left for a long time.

Scoot Boots help minimise the concussion once the shoes have been removed, allowing the horse to become comfortable and maintain regular exercise which reduces inflammation of the corium via increased circulation.

Can I Leave Scoot Boots on 24/7?

Your horse can be turned out in Scoot Boots 24/7! This is great for a horse suffering such pathologies as Pedal Osteitis. Scoot Boots can help provide the support required as well as offer extra protection through Scoot Pads. The TPU material used in the manufacture of Scoot Boots is in itself highly shock-absorbing, however, Scoot Pads can be inserted inside the Scoot Boot to provide extra shock absorption.

Scoot Boots can also be used 24/7 if your horse has sensitive soles or is transitioning from being shod to barefoot.

Conclusion with Dave Macdonald

When I first created the Scoot Boot, I intended to create the world’s best performing hoof boot, and we have achieved great success with our fantastic range of Scoot Boot products!

Along the way, it has been wonderful to discover how many people are achieving great results using Scoot Boots for rehabbing their horses.

The best thing about Scoot Boots is that they can be kept on 24/7; the hooves stay clean and dry as the horse’s natural hoof heat combined with the boots constant airflow works to dry out the hooves in the boot, removing the risk of bacterial build-up which can cause additional issues.
